Broadbeach is south of Surfers Paradise on the Queensland Gold Coast. This part of the QLD coast is a quieter and more family orientated part of the famous holiday coast. Much of the Queensland coast is perfect for holidays but it is the modern facilities combined with the seaside lifestyle that attracts holidaymakers to the Gold Coast.

Accommodation ranges from 5-star hotels, many resorts, highrise apartment blocks to some lowrise blocks, and if the gambler in you wants to party, there is also Jupiters Casino.

The Queensland Gold Coast has been the holiday spot for many of Australia’s population who inhabit the cities of Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Of course, people from all over the world visit this beautiful holiday coast, but it is popular with many ‘locals’ as well. Australians love their beaches and the wonderful coastal lifestyle, so the Gold Coast is a natural place to visit.

Broadbeach in the past 10 years has become more developed with newer shopping centres and more highrise development but the open spaces are still there and access to the beachfront is easy from many points along the boardwalk. Many of the hotel chains are there; Mantra, Westin, Crowne Plaza, Sofitel, Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Sheraton, Sebel and even a Palazzo Versace. A quick search on Google and you will find just the right type of accommodation.

For the real party animals Surfers Paradise (10 min drive north) is the place to stay. Surfers has more congested high rise, more night clubs, more café lifestyle and along with all this, more alcohol and alcohol induced problems. Surfers Paradise tends to attract the 18 - 30 year olds who enjoy the surf, nightlife and general party atmosphere.

This is one of the main reasons families prefer to stay in Broadbeach, which although has the Casino and some of the social issues associated with that, is a safer and quieter place to stay. Also, the relaxation factor is better due to the lack of congestion.

One of the more pleasant things to do on the Coast is to visit the many art galleries and shops. Many local artists' work is featured as well as Aboriginal art, all very unique and Australian.

One of the main attractions, though, of staying on the Gold Coast is the theme parks – Dreamworld, Seaworld and Movieworld. These are a must for families and many people include all or some of these parks in their stay. The parks are approximately 20 min drive from Broadbeach and there are many tour operators and buses available to take you. In fact, the local bus system is very good value for those on a budget as they run regularly to the theme parks. There are many budget holiday deals available on the Gold Coast too.

The weather* in South East Queensland which encompasses the Gold Coast is temperate throughout the year. This is another of the attractions of this area, sunshine is a daily occurrence and in summer 25+ degrees celcius (80 degrees F) is the average temperature. Sunscreen, hats and t-shirts are always on hand as everyone enjoys the magnificent weather be they at the beach or lazing by a pool at their hotel, apartment or resort.

*Unfortunately 2011 (and late 2010) has seen so much rain in Australia there have been widespread floods throughout Southern Queensland, prompting many fund raising events Australia wide (and worldwide). The rain is all part of the La Niná phenomenon which has blasted the Australian east coast for 6 months. The rain has kept temperatures lower than normal.

A Summer of Natural Disasters

Update: Late in the evening of 2nd February 2011 Northern Queensland was hit by a massive category 5 cyclone, "Yasi", causing widespread environmental damage and floods. At the time of publishing this hub there was only one life lost during this cyclone and this was due to early preparation as evacuation centres were organised well in advance.

Due to these two phenomenal natural disasters, a flood and a cyclone, many holidaymakers cancelled or deferred their holidays. The Gold Coast however was not affected by either disaster and Queensland will recover quickly so there is no reason to delay your visit.

Where To Stay In Broadbeach

Mantra On The Park, Broadbeach

Our holiday in Jan 2011 was a short 6 days and we stayed at the Mantra on the Park, right in the centre of Broadbeach. Our stay was very pleasant as the staff was so helpful when we had a problem with our room on Level 2. Even though they were fully booked they were able to accommodate our request to move to a higher floor as I needed peace and quiet to be able to write (yes I took work with me on our holiday). The apartment style accommodation is perfect for families, they were clean and equipped with all the facilities needed for a beach stay - spa, air conditioning, fluffy towels, fully equipped kitchen, balcony with views and internet connection.

A few years earlier we stayed at another Mantra apartment block, Mantra Sierra Grand. This one was newer than the one on the park but other than that they were both excellent places to stay as they are central to everything including the beach.

While some of the following may be available on the Gold Coast, they are not located in Broadbeach ....

Westin, Crowne Plaza, Sofitel, Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Sheraton, Sebel, Palazzo Versace.

However there are many high quality independent hotels and resorts in Broadbeach

Mentalist Acer, thanks for commenting. Our beaches are certainly beautiful and some are very famous.

Mrs J. B, it is a great place for a holiday. Hope you can see it some time.

Blair, thanks for noticing my oversight. You are right not all these hotels are in Broadbeach but they are on the Gold Coast as well as other parts of the Queensland holiday coast.

I would love that. I am sure that to just get out of the US for a week or two would be heaven.

Love Broadbeach - we stay at Talisman Apartments on the beach - bit older but refurbished so very nice.

A week or two would not be enough Mrs JB, you would be better to stay at least 4 weeks and really enjoy the Aussie hospitality.

Hi JAB, yes the Talisman is older but in a great position right near the beach. Just walk across the road and there you are. Thanks for commenting.

My daughter lived on the Gold Coast for her 'tour' in Australia with her now ex-husband. I had always wanted to see it so I guess now I have - virtually!

Hi Audrey, nice to hear from you. I guess you have seen the Gold Coast now, although my little digital doesn't do it justice, you really must see it for yourself. I'm sure your daughter enjoyed her stay.
